Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas admitted Monday that over 85% of migrants encountered at the border are being released into the United States, three people who attended a private meeting with the secretary say.
The revelation highlights the reason behind immigration problems affecting the country. The surge of illegal immigrants has overwhelmed border cities and areas throughout the nation, including deep-blue “sanctuary cities” like New York City and Chicago.
Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin reported that three U.S. Border Patrol sources revealed that Mayorkas admitted to the high release rate for migrants. Mayorkas’ comments came during a private meeting with agents in Eagle Pass, Texas, in a discussion about migrants caught crossing the border illegally.
The National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) Union confirmed the claim. Brandon Judd, president of NBPC, was in the room when Mayorkas made the admission.
“During this meeting, Brandon Judd told Mayorkas that Americans have the right to know the facts about what’s going on at the border,” NBPC posted on X. “It was at that point Mayorkas admitted that ‘over 85%’ of the people illegally crossing our border are being released.”
The border problem appears to be growing worse, even beyond the failures under Biden. DHS reported a record-breaking number of illegal immigrant encounters in 2022 along with more fentanyl-related crimes in the past two years than the past five years combined.
Republicans have claimed there has been a skyrocketing number of illegals found to be on the terrorist watch-list. GOP leaders have called for the impeachment of Mayorkas for his actions.
Republicans have charged that Mayorkas is violating his oath to uphold the Constitution by not enforcing federal immigration law. They argue that the secretary’s actions are a dereliction of duty and that he has lied to Congress and the American people many times.
“I believe Secretary Mayorkas is an abject failure, but it’s not because of incompetence. I believe he has done this intentionally,” Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R) said during an interview over the weekend on “Meet the Press.” “These are intentional policy decisions that he’s made – I think there must be accountability for that.”
