San Francisco has been a hotbed of cultural controversy for years. Radical leftist politics and policies have turned the once great city into a laughingstock among Americans.
Liberal Democrats who rule the city have instituted a variety of programs that focus on supporting specialty groups. The liberals believe they should take money from everyday city taxpayers and provide handouts for their specialty choices.
Now a group of San Francisco residents is suing city officials over an allegedly “illegal” program that sends taxpayer cash to black and Latino biological men who “identify as females.”
From the Daily Caller:
“Specifically, Plaintiffs contend that any expenditure of taxpayer funds or taxpayer-financed resources on the GIFT program is illegal under Article 1, section 7 of the California Constitution because the program’s grant of preferential treatment to biological males who identify as females is immediately suspect and presumptively invalid and cannot survive strict scrutiny review,” the complaint reads.
The suit was prompted after Democratic Mayor London Breed, who is listed as a defendant, announced the “Guaranteed Income for Trans People (GIFT) Program” in November 2022. The program delivers $1,200 per month for up to 18 months to “low-income transgender San Franciscans” to help with “financial insecurity within trans communities.”
That “preferential treatment” is what plaintiffs in the lawsuit argue is unconstitutional. Plaintiffs allege the program is nothing more than racial and sexual discrimination since only transgender minorities can apply. The lawsuit asked the court to enjoin the city from using taxpayer dollars to fund the program.
“The transgender extremists running San Francisco are illegally using taxpayer money to hand out free cash to transgender individuals based on race and sex in blatant violation of the state’s constitution,” President Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, said in a press release. The nonprofit legal group represents several of the plaintiffs.
The lawsuit named Breed, Carmen Chu, city administrator of the City and County of San Francisco, José Cisneros, treasurer of the City and County of San Francisco, and John Doe, the executive director of the Office of Transgender Initiatives of the City and County of San Francisco, as defendants.
Breed previously stated in a press release that the GIFT program opened with 55 applicants and provided an income as well as access to “gender-affirming medical and mental health care.” Funds were first distributed in January 2023 and are set to continue through 2024. Undocumented individuals may also apply if they meet criteria, according to the program website.
Key Takeaways:
- San Francisco program giving cash to transgender people called “illegal.”
- City residents filed a lawsuit to stop the program approved by liberals.
- The plaintiffs said granting “preferential treatment” can’t survive scrutiny.
