What’s Happening:
John Durham’s Russiagate probe resulted in the prosecution of a former Hillary Clinton lawyer. Durham accused Michael Sussman of lying to the FBI, when he told the agency he was not working for a client.
The trial lasted several weeks, with numerous bombshells coming out. Today, the jury gave its verdict on Sussman’s fate.
From The Hill:
Michael Sussman, a lawyer who represented Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and the Democratic Party, was acquitted by a federal jury on Tuesday of a single count of lying to the FBI, The Associated Press reported…
Prosecutors accused Sussman of lying when he told Baker that he was not attending the meeting on behalf of any of his clients, which at the time included Clinton’s campaign and a cybersecurity researcher named Rodney Joffe, who had assembled the Alfa Bank data.
A federal jury found Sussman, a man involved in Hillary’s attempts to frame Trump, not guilty of lying to the FBI.
The left is calling this a “major victory” and a “setback” to Durham’s ongoing investigation. But it was clear from the start that this trial was not going to take down the real villains of this scandal.
Sussman was being charged with a process crime. Even if he was found guilty, he would have gotten a slap on the wrist at best.
Even before the trial began, the Clinton-appointed judge refused to allow a wealth of evidence to be submitted, proving the fix was in from the start.
But it was clear this had little to do with Sussman’s lying to the FBI. This was about putting him and other members of Clinton’s team on the stand—forcing them to testify under oath.
And Durham got them to do it. His biggest victory was getting Robby Mook, Clinton’s 2016 campaign manager, to reveal she was the one that decided to leak false data about Trump to the press.
Mook and other DNC officials did not trust the data, but it was Clinton herself who pushed for it. That lends weight to Trump’s belief that she and her allies were deliberately trying to rig the campaign by spreading this false information.
Sussman was only a part of a bigger campaign of bringing the truth to the American public. And I’m sure Durham is far from finished doing that.
Key Takeaways:
- A federal jury cleared Michael Sussman of lying to the FBI.
- This was part of a larger investigation against Russiagate.
- The trial exposed a wealth of information about Hillary Clinton and her campaign.
