There’s a familiar routine in Washington that grassroots conservatives have watched play out for decades. When the Republican base rejects an establishment incumbent in a primary, the losing side doesn’t rally behind the nominee. Instead, the machinery of retaliation kicks in – quietly, deliberately, and always with just enough distance to maintain innocence. The goal was never unity. It’s retribution.

The Texas Senate race has become the starkest example in recent memory. Ken Paxton defeated longtime Sen. John Cornyn in a bruising GOP primary runoff earlier this year. He now faces Democrat James Talarico in what should be a routine Republican hold. But something has surfaced out of Cornyn’s own orbit – something a veteran Republican operative called “unheard of” – and it tells you everything about where the old guard’s loyalties actually rest.

From Breitbart:

A longtime aide to Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) has joined Democrat James Talarico’s Senate campaign as he tries to defeat Republican nominee Ken Paxton in Texas.

Jacob Smith, who spent five years working for Cornyn as a deputy legislative director and policy adviser, is now serving as Talarico’s deputy policy director, according to NOTUS.

“I’ve worked for Republicans like Senator Cornyn my entire career, but this year I’m proud to be joining James Talarico’s campaign,” Smith said in a statement released by the campaign.

A staffer’s betrayal – or a senator’s revenge?

Jacob Smith didn’t stumble into Democratic politics on a whim. This is a man who built his entire career in Republican offices – working for Sen. Roger Wicker, Rep. Frank Lucas on the House Science Committee, and then spending half a decade at Cornyn’s right hand. His resume screams loyal GOP operative. And now he’s crafting policy for a Democrat trying to flip a Texas Senate seat.

Smith didn’t hold back, either. He called Paxton “the most corrupt, self-dealing politician in Texas who would sell their futures to the highest contributor just to hold onto power.” Quite the parting gift to his own party. But here’s the thing – a mid-level staffer doesn’t torch his Republican career in a vacuum. That kind of move requires a climate. And the climate was set by his former boss.

Cornyn’s response to the defection was, let’s say, revealing. He called it a “personal decision by Jacob.” That’s it. No condemnation. No forceful endorsement of the Republican nominee. No acknowledgment that helping a Democrat capture a Texas Senate seat might be – oh, I don’t know – a problem. Just a verbal shrug and a turned back.

The “told you so” senator

This wasn’t some isolated moment of diplomatic restraint. Cornyn has been quietly sharpening the knife for months. Earlier this summer, he told Mediaite that polling showing Talarico ahead of Paxton was “ominous for down ballot races,” adding with barely concealed satisfaction, “I’m not gonna say I told you so, but…”

He also offered only the barest possible commitment to “support the Republican ticket” – language so diluted it dissolves on contact. When your former staffers are enlisting with the opposition and your response is a shoulder shrug paired with public “I warned you” commentary, you’re not supporting anything. You’re sabotaging it with a smile.

Democrats say the quiet part out loud

The most damning confirmation comes straight from the other side. Veteran Democratic consultant Steve Schale explained the logic behind hiring Smith with refreshing honesty: “They can’t win on Dem vote alone, so one of the key things Talarico must do is send a message to Republicans that it’s ok to do what they aren’t used to doing: voting for a Democrat.”

There it is. Democrats need Republican enablers to make their Texas gambit work. And Cornyn’s circle is delivering exactly that. Nate Silver now rates the Texas seat “Lean D.” A Democrat hasn’t won a major statewide race in Texas since the 1990s – but the Beltway old guard seems determined to end that streak out of wounded pride.

Nobody is asking Texas conservatives to pretend Ken Paxton is a flawless candidate. His legal battles and personal controversies are well documented. But the choice in November isn’t between Paxton and some idealized Republican alternative. That candidate doesn’t exist. The choice is between a Republican who will vote to secure the border, confirm conservative judges, and defend the Second Amendment – and a Democrat who will hand Chuck Schumer another reliable vote on every progressive priority imaginable.

Texas Republican primary voters made their decision. The party insiders’ refusal to honor that result isn’t principle. It’s petulance. And if Texas turns blue in November, the blame won’t fall on the grassroots conservatives who chose their nominee. It will land squarely on the Washington figures who decided their bruised egos mattered more than holding the line.

Key Takeaways

  • Cornyn’s longtime staffer defected to the Democrat running against the GOP nominee who beat Cornyn.
  • Cornyn’s non-response signals tacit approval of the betrayal from within his own ranks.
  • Democrats are openly leveraging Republican infighting to mount a historic Texas upset.
  • Establishment spite – not grassroots conviction – is the real threat to the Senate majority.
