There was a time when the Democrat Party fancied itself the party of inclusion — a coalition sprawling enough to hold union workers and Wall Street donors, moderates and progressives, the faithful and the secular. That illusion is crumbling fast. Today’s progressive left doesn’t just disagree with its opponents. It ritually purges its own allies for insufficient devotion to the cause.

When a political movement starts treating ideological conformity as a prerequisite for purchasing a cup of coffee, we’ve crossed into different territory entirely. And a recent episode in Brooklyn captures the Democrat Party’s internal unraveling with almost poetic precision.

From the Daily Wire:

The Department of Justice is investigating a New York City coffee chain that promotes “radical hospitality” after it threatened to refuse service to Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman over his views on Israel.

Poetica Coffee, which operates seven locations across New York City, mocked Rep. Goldman in a Facebook post Sunday, refunding his purchase and declaring that it does not serve “genocide enablers.”

Here’s what actually transpired. Goldman — a sitting Democratic congressman — stopped by a Poetica Coffee location in Brooklyn with his seven-year-old daughter. The barista graciously let the girl use the restroom. Goldman, being a decent human being, bought a coffee and left a tip as a thank-you. Father-daughter outing. No confrontation. No soapbox speeches. Just a bathroom break and a latte.

Then the shop’s social media team decided to make it personal. They posted a photo of Goldman, branded him a “genocide enabler,” refunded his $9.82 purchase, and declared he should never return. “Too bad we didn’t recognize you right away, or we would have turned you away,” they wrote. Charming customer service, that.

This is from a company whose own website boasts that “the guest is sacred, the books are unbanned, and the door is open to everyone.” Turns out “everyone” carries quite the asterisk — one apparently shaped like a Star of David.

A party at war with itself

So who exactly did Poetica Coffee decide to publicly humiliate? Some MAGA firebrand? A hawkish Republican defense committee chair? Not quite.

Dan Goldman is a liberal Democrat. He’s called Benjamin Netanyahu’s government “extremist.” He’s opposed settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank. He’s described the situation in Gaza as “horrific” and pushed for an end to the fighting. Not exactly a neocon war drum, in other words.

But in today’s progressive movement, none of that buys you a shred of grace. Goldman committed the unforgivable sin of calling himself a “proud Zionist” and accepting support from AIPAC-affiliated groups. For the far left, that alone transforms a political ally into a moral leper.

This isn’t happening in a vacuum. Goldman faces a bruising primary challenge from Brad Lander, the former city comptroller endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has made opposition to Israel the centerpiece of his campaign. Poetica’s stunt wasn’t some random act of barista activism — it was the street-level eruption of the same intra-party purge playing out at the ballot box. The progressive base has lurched so far left that even sympathetic Democrats get denounced as fascists between espresso pulls.

The DOJ steps in

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon wasn’t amused. She announced swiftly that the Civil Rights Division had opened an investigation into Poetica Coffee.

“Federal law prohibits public accommodations such as coffee shops from discriminating against patrons based on their race, religion, or national origin,” Dhillon said. “These actions are not only reprehensible, they’re potentially illegal.”

Now, the legal terrain here is genuinely tricky. Political ideology isn’t a protected class under federal or New York state law. A coffee shop can, technically, refuse to serve you because it dislikes your voting record. But when a Jewish congressman gets targeted specifically for supporting the Jewish state — complete with a sneering aside that his money is “probably coming from AIPAC anyways” — the gap between political disagreement and religious bigotry narrows considerably. Good on Dhillon for taking it seriously.

Even Goldman showed more composure than his tormentors deserved, telling CNN he’d rather the DOJ spend its resources investigating antisemitism against people without his public platform. The man got publicly smeared for buying his kid a bathroom break, and his first instinct was magnanimity. Meanwhile, the coffeehouse revolutionaries couldn’t muster basic courtesy.

When the revolution eats its own

Conservatives have warned for years that the left’s brand of tolerance is performative — generous in theory, merciless in practice. This story proves it in miniature. Not because a coffee shop was rude to a Republican, but because it publicly savaged a Democrat whose seven-year-old daughter needed a restroom.

The progressive left has swapped persuasion for excommunication, dialogue for denunciation. And the price of their “radical hospitality” turns out to be exactly $9.82.

Key Takeaways

  • Poetica Coffee publicly banned a Democratic congressman for not being progressive enough on Israel.
  • The shop’s promise of “radical hospitality” apparently expires the moment it encounters political disagreement.
  • The DOJ Civil Rights Division has opened an investigation into potential discrimination with antisemitic overtones.
  • The progressive left’s purity spiral is no longer just targeting conservatives — it’s devouring the Democrat Party from within.
