The right to vote is the bedrock of self-governance. Not a privilege handed down by bureaucrats. Not a participation trophy. It’s the singular tool that lets American citizens – and only American citizens – steer the direction of this nation. That promise, though, is only as sturdy as the system protecting it.

So here’s the uncomfortable question: what happens when an entire state refuses to verify whether the people casting ballots are even eligible? Worse – what happens when state officials actively obstruct the people trying to find out? Washington state just gave us a brutal answer.

From The Post Millennial:

The Justice Department announced Monday that federal investigators have identified 405 non-citizens who voted illegally in Washington state, with many casting ballots in multiple elections, and warned that potentially thousands more could be voting illegally as the state fights federal demands for its complete voter registration database.

Acting US Attorney Neil Floyd said investigators identified more than 1,500 ballots cast by the individuals. Federal prosecutors have asked Washington election officials to set aside ballots submitted by those on the list until their eligibility can be confirmed.

Four hundred and five confirmed non-citizens. Over 1,500 fraudulent ballots. Some of these individuals have been voting for more than a decade – one record handed to state officials dates all the way back to 1994. And Floyd made clear this is “only the tip of the iceberg.” In a state with 5.1 million registered voters and an all-mail ballot system, the real number could be vastly worse.

Floyd didn’t mince words: “If the state of Washington knowingly or unknowingly allows a non-citizen to vote, they are canceling out or stealing the vote of the United States citizen.”

A state that refuses to look

Instead of cooperating with federal investigators, Washington has waged a legal battle to keep its full voter rolls sealed. The DOJ’s lawsuit demanding access? A federal judge tossed it. Investigators have been forced to file over 60 individual subpoenas just to cobble together the evidence they’ve uncovered so far. Imagine what they’d find with the complete picture.

Secretary of State Steve Hobbs – a Democrat, naturally – complained the timing was “intended to cast unfounded suspicion on the results.” Unfounded. Meanwhile, the state’s own Motor Voter program has been registering green card holders without their knowledge. Those residents received ballots in the mail and reasonably assumed they were allowed to vote. The system manufactured the problem, and the people running it are calling the cleanup a conspiracy.

Washington isn’t an isolated case, either. In California, the administration is moving to block ballots from 20,000 suspected non-citizens. This is a nationwide rot.

Your vote is the counterpunch

Midterm ballots are being cast as you read this. Every illegal ballot that slides through dilutes the voice of a lawful American voter – your voice, your neighbor’s voice, your community’s voice. The only force powerful enough to overwhelm a compromised system is an engaged citizenry that refuses to stay home.

The federal accountability machine is moving. But it cannot do this alone. Return your ballot. Drag a friend to the drop box. The republic survives when its citizens actually defend it.

Key Takeaways

  • The DOJ confirmed 405 non-citizens cast over 1,500 illegal ballots in Washington state.
  • Washington officials are actively blocking federal access to full voter registration data.
  • The state’s Motor Voter program registered non-citizens without their knowledge or consent.
  • Every illegal ballot cancels a legal citizen’s vote – massive midterm turnout is the antidote.
