What’s Happening:
Thanks to Elon Musk, we know without a doubt the Democrats within the federal government were working to silence Americans. Twitter executives were communicating with various agencies, taking down posts and even banning users, all in the name of stopping “misinformation.”
Democrats have been doing this for years. But we know their meddling with our free speech influenced the 2020 Election. How much more of this has been going on since then? Now, House Republicans are taking steps to shut down the left’s latest war on the First Amendment.
From Fox News:
House Republicans are working on legislation this week aimed at ensuring that the federal government cannot work with Big Tech to stifle free speech under the guise of combating “disinformation.”
The House Oversight Committee on Tuesday will mark up two bills that Republicans say will protect speech from Biden administration censorship following allegations that Biden’s federal agencies have labeled “inconvenient facts” as “misinformation” or “disinformation” to stifle speech.
Ever since Musk exposed what was going on between Democrats and social media, Americans have been demanding answers. Republicans in the House are preparing two bills to ensure Democrats will no longer have the ability to collude with Big Tech into censoring Americans.
Musk revealed that the FBI and other agencies were flagging content on Twitter as “misinformation,” pressuring the company to take posts and users down. These agencies had influence over Twitter (and other social networks) because they were dumping millions into their lamps.
The first bill would expand the Hatch Act, which prevents federal workers from engaging in political activities through their official positions. That law prevents federal employees from working on campaigns, for example. But this expansion might also include attempts at influencing Big Tech companies.
The second bill would require federal agencies to provide a report to Congress on “every instance” in the last five years said agencies suppressed lawful free speech on social media. That, of course, would trigger a sweeping investigation across nearly every federal agency.
These bills have a good chance of passing in the House. But questions remain if the Democrat-controlled Senate would vote on them. Even if they did, it would be up to Joe Biden to sign them into law.
But if Democrats do oppose these bills, they would be essentially admitting to censorship. Why oppose bills that are aimed at protecting the First Amendment and shutting down obvious violations of the Constitution?
Chances are, however, Democrats will oppose these bills. But that doesn’t mean Republicans are out of options. Even now GOP-run committees are exposing what Democrats have done to censor Americans. The consequences of these investigations will be felt for years to come.
Democrats just might regret coercing Big Tech into silencing Americans.
Key Takeaways:
- House GOP is pushing two bills aimed at ending online censorship.
- The bills will prevent federal agencies from coercing social networks to take down posts, etc.
- They will also require federal agencies to report on attempts at censorship over the last five years.
