Kansas Republicans Defeat Liberal Veto, Pass Law to Ban Trans Procedures on Children

The American heartland has long stood as a bulwark against controversial medical procedures that threaten our nation’s foundational values.

While coastal states rush to embrace increasingly extreme positions, many central states have maintained their commitment to traditional principles that have guided our society for generations.

In recent years, the divide between conservative and progressive approaches to children’s healthcare has grown increasingly stark. Parents across the country have watched with growing concern as some states abandon established medical practices in favor of experimental treatments that can have irreversible consequences for young Americans.

In a decisive victory for traditional values and parental rights, Kansas Republicans successfully overrode Democratic Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of the “Help Not Harm Act” on Tuesday. The legislation, which protects minors from permanent medical alterations, passed with overwhelming support in both chambers, securing a 31-9 victory in the Senate and an 85-34 margin in the House.

From ‘The Daily Wire’:
Kansas Republicans on Tuesday passed a bill banning irreversible transgender medical procedures on minors, overriding a veto from Democratic Governor Laura Kelly.

Republicans voted 31-9 in the state Senate and 85-34 in the state House to pass the “Help Not Harm Act,” which blocks doctors from performing transgender surgeries on minors or putting them on cross-sex hormones and puberty blockers…

“Today, we sign the Help Not Harm Act in honor of the children who Governor Kelly failed to protect with her repeated vetoes of this sensible legislation,” Senate President Ty Masterson and House Speaker Dan Hawkins said in a joint statement.

Protecting Kansas Youth

The comprehensive legislation, set to take effect this month, establishes crucial safeguards for children’s well-being. It prohibits doctors from performing irreversible surgeries on minors or prescribing cross-sex hormones and puberty blockers.

The law creates clear accountability measures, allowing both minors and parents who have been harmed by such procedures to pursue civil action against medical providers who violate these new protections.

Data compiled by Do No Harm reveals the urgency of these protections. From 2019 to 2023, Kansas recorded 22 surgery patients and 71 hormone and puberty blocker patients under 18 – numbers that demanded immediate legislative action to protect vulnerable youth.

National Momentum

Kansas now joins 26 other states that have implemented similar protections for minors, reflecting growing national momentum to safeguard children from experimental medical procedures.

The state’s action aligns with President Donald Trump’s recent executive order barring federal support for such procedures on children under 19.

U.S. Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS), who has introduced similar legislation at the federal level, celebrated the victory: “Despite Kansas Governor Laura Kelly’s best efforts, the mutilation and sterilization of minors will not happen in Kansas. Praise God!”

Standing Firm for Families

The legislation takes a comprehensive approach to protecting traditional family values. It prevents state resources from promoting social transition and ensures taxpayer dollars support time-tested approaches to youth development.

The law specifically prohibits state employees whose duties include child care from promoting experimental social or medical interventions.

Implementation guidelines are clear and immediate, demonstrating Kansas lawmakers’ commitment to swift action in protecting children. Medical providers who violate the new protections face serious consequences, including potential loss of their medical licenses.

Key Takeaways:

  • Kansas legislators successfully defend traditional values with veto override protecting minors.
  • Overwhelming bipartisan support shows growing momentum for child protection measures.
  • New law aligns with federal direction while asserting state sovereignty on family issues.
