The House of Representatives was thrown into chaos after Matt Gaetz and a few other Republicans sided with Democrats to oust Speaker McCarthy. The fate of the lower chamber is left in question, as lawmakers scramble to decide who should fill the vacant seat.
Several names have already been floated by media pundits. Rep. Jim Jordan has thrown his hat into the ring, asking for support from his colleagues. Others have speculated that allies of McCarthy might try for the gavel themselves.
Now, another name is rising to the surface. These lawmakers made national news years ago, after surviving an assassination attempt. He officially announced his bid for the speakership.
From The Post Millennial:
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise has announced his bid for the House Speaker seat, coming after Kevin McCarthy was ousted and Rep. Jim Jordan announced his own bid…
“God already gave me another chance at life. I believe we were all put here for a purpose. This next chapter won’t be easy, but I know what it takes to fight and I am prepared for the battles that lie ahead. I humbly ask you for your support on this mission to be your Speaker of the House.”
Rep. Steve Scalise, the House Majority Leader, is campaigning for the position of Speaker of the House. Scalise was the victim of a shooting in 2017 when a gunman targeted Republicans at a baseball game practice. His name rose to prominence after surviving a near-deadly attack and returning to Congress months later.
In his letter to Republicans, he said that God had “already gave me another chance at life.” He stated he was “humbly” asking for their support to become the next speaker. Scalise said that Republicans must not “slow down” but focus on their efforts against Joe Biden.
Several investigations have been underway by House Republicans since the beginning of the year. Some have probed the “weaponizing” of government by this administration. Others investigated the Biden family and their finances–which has led to an impeachment probe.
It appears Scalise supports these continued efforts to oppose the Biden administration. Should he be elected Speaker, it is unlikely these investigations will slow down.
Scalise also advocated for “individual” spending bills in an “open and transparent process” instead of a massive spending bill that could hide many things from the public.
