This week, the Republican Party held its second presidential primary debate. Pundits have declared their winners of the night, including Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley. But none of those candidates are polling close to frontrunner Donald Trump.
The former president is the favorite for winning the nomination. Meanwhile, numerous Republicans are spending time and money attacking each other and potentially dividing the party.
Republican icon Newt Gingrich is watching the fight. And he is making a demand to the party that could flip the primaries upside-down.

Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich is adding his voice to the growing chorus calling for the Republican National Committee to throw in the towel on what’s been a pitiful debate season so far, a move that ensures the GOP would get behind frontrunner Donald Trump in plenty of time.
.@newtgingrich: "None of them is in the same league as Donald Trump – None of them is in a position to say – I can take on the entire national establishment, have them beat me up for 8 years, and still be…campaigning…
Trump is a phenomenon – Unlike anything I've seen." pic.twitter.com/ksdwkfD5HH

Newt Gingrich is calling on the current Republican contenders to drop out of the race, saying: “this race is over.” He is urging the party to get behind Donald Trump, to presumably focus on defeating Joe Biden next year. The former House Speaker called Trump a “phenomenon.”
He praised Trump for his resolve and strength, despite unprecedented opposition. Gingrich said none of the current GOP candidates are “in the same league” as Donald Trump. The Republican stated that the candidates will not be able to do what Trump has done, including take on “the entire national establishment.”
Gingrich’s words appear to echo those of current House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The speaker recently backed Trump’s campaign, stating that Ron DeSantis was not on the same “level” as the former president.
Trump himself has pointed to primary polling, calling on his rivals to throw in the towel. He has urged his fellow candidates to unite behind his campaign, so Republicans can focus on defeating Joe Biden and Democrats in 2024.
Much work will have to be done if Republicans want to win big in 2024. They not only need to win back the White House but secure majorities in the House and Senate. That will require considerable effort on the part of the party.
It is possible that Gingrich and others think the GOP is wasting resources on primary debates that could be used to help congressional races.
Whether any candidates will heed Gingrich’s advice remains to be seen.
