Imagine living in a house with no locks on the doors. Every time you suggest installing a deadbolt, your neighbors launch a lobbying campaign to stop you. When you point out that strangers have been wandering in, they assure you it was just a glitch – a clerical error, really – and that break-ins almost never happen.

For years, Americans who raised concerns about noncitizen voting were told they were chasing phantoms. The system works, we were assured. Federal law already prohibits it. Asking for proof of citizenship at voter registration is unnecessary at best, suppressive at worst. The SAVE America Act – which would require documentary proof of citizenship to register and photo ID at the polls – passed the House with President Trump’s full support. Then it stalled in the Senate, stuck in the amber of institutional resistance.
Then Reuters, hardly a conservative outfit, went and pulled the thread.
Their investigation found that more than 30,000 self-declared noncitizens were added to voter rolls across eleven states since 2000. California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Virginia – red and blue alike. Reuters chalked it up to software glitches and clerical errors, calling them “inadvertent bureaucratic failures.” That framing is doing an awful lot of heavy lifting. Because whether the failures were intentional matters far less than the fact that tens of thousands of people with no legal right to vote were registered to do so. In New Jersey alone, Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill disclosed that 6,600 noncitizens sat on the rolls – and nearly 400 of them actually cast ballots.
Senator Mike Lee took to the Senate floor that same day and didn’t bother sugarcoating it.

That thing that they claim never happens, voter fraud or noncitizen voting, just keeps happening over and over and over again. Even though we have laws that prohibit things like noncitizen voting, those laws have been rendered difficult and essentially impossible to enforce.
He’s right. And the reason enforcement is impossible is that the whole system runs on the honor code. You check a box, you’re in. No documentation. No verification. Lee drove the point home with a comparison I frankly love: Olive Garden requires photo ID to use its never-ending pasta pass. Voting in a federal election? Just your word will do.
But here’s what really gets under my skin. It’s not just that the system is broken – it’s that powerful people are spending real money to keep it that way. Federal lobbying disclosures show that 26 organizations lobbied against the SAVE America Act in the second quarter of 2026. The ACLU and SPLC, sure – you’d expect that. But Planned Parenthood? The League of Conservation Voters? The Human Rights Campaign? Five major labor unions? I’d love someone to explain what an abortion advocacy group’s stake is in opposing citizenship verification at the ballot box.
You don’t need me to connect those dots. But I will anyway.
Only three organizations lobbied in favor of the bill. Three against twenty-six. And let’s not forget – these same groups ran the voter suppression playbook against Georgia’s election integrity law. They lost in court. Turnout went up. The script doesn’t change because it doesn’t have to. It just needs to work long enough to stall the legislation.
Lee put it best: “To ask the question is to answer it.” Why would this constellation of left-leaning organizations fight so hard against a commonsense measure that most Americans – including most Democrats in polling – actually support?
A republic that cannot verify its voters is a republic running on faith alone. And faith, as any conservative worth his salt knows, belongs in church – not in the machinery of self-governance.
