Russia continues to show the world that it is no friend to peace and stability. Its radical president, Vladimir Putin, is clearly trying to intimidate the free world through brut force. He triggered a conflict in Ukraine, which has drained resources from numerous democratic countries. And it seems he has plans to cause more havoc, joining with hostile nations like Iran and China.
Now, Russia has done something it hasn’t done since the Cold War. An American reporter for The Wall Street Journal was on assignment in Yekaterinburg. That’s when Putin’s thugs did the unthinkable.
From AP News:
Russia’s security service arrested an American reporter for The Wall Street Journal on espionage charges, the first time a U.S. correspondent has been detained on spying accusations since the Cold War. The newspaper denied the allegations and demanded his release…
[FSB], which is the top domestic security agency and main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, alleged that Gershkovich “was acting on instructions from the American side to collect information about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex that constitutes a state secret.”
Putin’s Federal Security Service, Russia’s modern-day version of the KGB, has arrested American journalist Evan Gershkovich, accusing him of spying. The FSB claims Gershkovich was trying to collect information about Russia’s military secrets.
Obviously, this is nonsense. If America wants to send spies into Russia, why would they send someone so publicly, from an industry devoted to reporting on information? Does Russia really think we are that sloppy? Yes, Joe Biden’s an idiot. But he’s not the one sending spies anywhere.
This is clearly an attempt by Putin to amp up the hostilities between America and his country. Russia has arrested several Americans in recent years, on trumped-up charges.
But will America do the right thing to get Gershkovich back home? Biden went out of his way to free an un-American WNBA player, while leaving behind a pastor. How far will Joe go to help free this reporter? Democrats do love the press. Perhaps Gershkovich will get out soon.
