Earlier in the week, Senate Democrats released their border bill. Republicans were shocked to find that the bill did little to address the border crisis. Critics even claimed that the bill would make the crisis even worse.
More shocking was the news that the bill allocated 3 times more money for the Ukraine War than the border crisis.
Republicans quickly turned on Mitch McConnell for supporting the bill. The GOP leader backtracked, urging Republicans to reject it. And, before it could even reach the House, Senate Republicans sealed this bill’s fate.
From The Post Millennial:
On Wednesday, Senate Republicans blocked the bipartisan border security bill that provided more than $70 billion in foreign aid in exchange for a little more than $20 billion towards efforts to secure the US-Southern border.
By a vote of 49-50, a motion to proceed with the package was defeated, with the majority of the Senate GOP conference voting against it. The measure was advanced by the votes of Republican senators Susan Collins (ME), Lisa Murkowski (AK), James Lankford (OK), and Mitt Romney (UT). Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell cast the 41st vote, killing the bill.
In a rare showing of unity, Senate Republicans voted to block the Democrats’ border bill from advancing. Because the bill could not get 60 votes, it is officially dead. Mitch McConnell himself cast the killing 41st vote.
No doubt, Democrats will use this to claim Republicans are responsible for the border crisis since they refused to support what appeared to be a toxic bill. President Biden even went as far as to blame Donald Trump for the 6 million illegals who have entered the country since 2021.
But experts all agree that Biden does not need a single additional penny to end the border crisis. The ongoing problem is the result of Biden reversing Trump-era measures that secured the border. Not to mention decisions by his DHS head that have prevented Border Patrol from deporting border jumpers.
President Biden already has the authority to secure the border, through executive action. Instead, it appears he is using this crisis to bleed more money for his pet project, the Ukraine War. That war has been raging for years, with no end in sight. Yet Biden wants more American dollars to go toward the conflict.
But he won’t lift a finger to prevent millions of potentially dangerous people from flooding America.
- Senate Republicans voted to kill the Democrats’ “border” bill.
- The bill was ridiculed for doing arguably little to fix the border crisis.
- Under President Biden, over 6 million illegal aliens have entered the country.
