TEA awarded the firm contracts worth $3.578 million in 2021 and another $1.635 million in 2022 – north of $5.2 million in public money flowing directly to the organization cutting Talarico’s checks. Even better, those contracts aligned neatly with legislative priorities Talarico himself was championing in the House, including COVID-era learning loss programs.
RNC spokesman Zach Kraft called it what it looks like: a “textbook pay-to-play scheme” in which Talarico steered “millions in taxpayer funds to his DEI consulting agency.”
Paxton was blunter. “James Talarico abused his office to enrich himself and his employer,” he wrote on X. “He needs to answer for his corruption and explain to taxpayers why he used their tax dollars to benefit himself and the woke DEI firm paying him tens of thousands of dollars.”

Talarico’s camp insists there’s nothing here. His campaign calls the whole thing a “lie,” claiming his relationship with MAYA was fully disclosed under Texas House rules and that his contract explicitly barred him from representing the firm before the legislature or education agencies.
