Texas Democrat Talarico Missing From Campaign Trail for 12 Days as Senate Race Tightens to a Tie

The Texas Senate race has become one of the most consequential fights of the 2026 midterms.

A seat that could reshape the balance of power in Washington demands candidates who will stand before voters, take tough questions, and grind through every last day of the campaign. Thirty-one million Texans deserve nothing less.

And yet, something strange is happening in this race. Campaigns are grueling by design – they’re supposed to be. They test whether a candidate has the stamina and backbone to represent an entire state. So when a Senate contender simply evaporates during the homestretch, people notice. They start asking uncomfortable questions. Rightly so.

From the Daily Wire:

Texas Senate Democratic nominee James Talarico is reportedly “really sick,” as rumors swirl over his 12-day absence from the campaign trail with the race entering its final stretch.

The Daily Wire previously reported that Talarico came down with the flu following a glitzy New York City fundraiser with a far-Left filmmaker who called America a “sh*thole country.”

So here’s the central question nobody in Talarico’s camp seems eager to answer: can a candidate who vanishes for nearly two weeks – at the most critical moment of a Senate campaign – still convince Texans he deserves their vote? The early signs suggest the answer is no.

The timeline speaks for itself. Talarico’s last public appearance in Texas was September 26, a press conference in Carrollton. Two days later, he jetted off to a swanky private fundraiser in New York City with Robert De Niro.

By September 30, he popped up virtually at a South Texas event to announce his flu diagnosis. Then – radio silence. His campaign has scrubbed a series of scheduled events. As of this writing, his website lists zero upcoming appearances. He picked up the flu hobnobbing with Hollywood celebrities in Manhattan. Not exactly a war wound earned shaking hands at a VFW hall in Lubbock.

A Texas Democrat involved in the race put it bluntly to NBC: “He’s like, really sick. Believe me, we don’t want this right now.” No kidding.

A race slipping away

The political damage has been concrete and rapid. Before the disappearance, a New York Times/Siena poll had Talarico cruising with a six-point lead over Republican nominee Ken Paxton. A University of Massachusetts Lowell poll released Thursday paints a drastically different picture: the race is now dead even.

Texas Democrat Party Chair Kendall Scudder admitted the absence has allowed Paxton to catch “a little bit of a break.” That’s generous. Republicans have invested over $190 million in Texas ad spending from September through November.

Democrats? A comparatively modest $52 million. Every day Talarico hides is a day that Republican money works overtime without a Democratic candidate on the field to counter it.

Keep in mind – Trump carried Texas by double digits in 2024. The fact that this race was ever competitive should have had Republican strategists losing sleep. Now the momentum is reversing, and it’s the Democrats reaching for the antacids.

The attack lines write themselves

President Trump, never one to let an opening pass, pounced at a packed San Antonio rally Wednesday night. He followed up on Truth Social, calling the Democrat “TalaFREAKo” and asking pointedly: “12 days is a long time to rid yourself of the so-called flu bug. What’s going on?”

Paxton’s campaign has been equally savage. Spokeswoman Madison Cercy didn’t mince words: “If James Talarico is too fragile to face Texans, he has no business asking for their vote.” Hard to argue with that logic.

Talarico’s team attempted a counter-punch, noting Paxton has ducked debate challenges for 83 days. Fair enough. But deflection doesn’t replace presence. One candidate is barnstorming the state alongside the sitting President. The other is apparently bedridden somewhere, doing nothing.

BlazeTV host Sara Gonzales ratcheted up the intrigue, claiming she “received unverified information on James Talarico’s whereabouts” and warning bluntly: “If true, it will END his campaign.” Conservative commentator Meghan McCain offered a sharper prognosis: “This is not going to get better for Talarico.”

What Texans deserve

Talarico is expected to resurface at a CNN town hall on October 14. Whether one appearance can reverse nearly three weeks of accumulated damage is anybody’s guess. Polls are tightening. Republicans smell blood. And the narrative has hardened around a single, brutal question that Paxton’s rally crowds are already chanting in unison: Where is James Talarico?

Texans have never had much patience for candidates who retreat when the pressure mounts. With Election Day less than four weeks out, Talarico is burning daylight he simply doesn’t have.

Key Takeaways

  • Talarico has been absent from the trail for 12 days with no scheduled appearances.
  • His polling lead has collapsed – the Texas Senate race is now tied.
  • Trump and Paxton are aggressively exploiting the disappearance on the campaign trail.
  • Every silent day narrows Talarico’s already-shrinking window to recover.
