Trump Administration Reports Zero Illegal Migrant Releases in May, Down from 62,000 Last Year

Remember when politicians actually delivered on their campaign promises? Neither do most Americans. Campaign season brings big visions and bold pledges, followed by years of excuses and half-measures. Most voters have grown numb to the cycle of big talk followed by little action.

But sometimes, the impossible happens. A promise gets kept so completely that even critics are left searching for new talking points. Such rare events deserve attention, especially when they involve issues that affect millions of American lives and communities across the country.

For the first time since record-keeping began, Border Patrol agents didn’t release a single illegal migrant into the United States during May. This marks a huge 93% decrease from May 2024, when about 62,000 illegal aliens were released into the U.S. under the Biden administration.

From ‘New York Post’:
Border Patrol agents did not release any illegal migrants into the United States during the month of May, a decrease from the more than 60,000 who were released into the U.S. the year before.

The complete halt of migrant releases happened even though Border Patrol caught 8,725 illegal aliens trying to cross the southern border last month. Acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Pete Flores credited the dramatic shift to the current administration. He told reporters that “under the leadership of this administration, CBP has received historic support resulting in another 93% decrease in illegal crossings.”

The Trump Effect in Action

The impact goes beyond monthly numbers. In a single day this month, Border Patrol encountered just 95 illegal immigrants across the entire southern border – the lowest daily total ever recorded. This stands in stark contrast with the previous administration, which sometimes saw more than 10,000 encounters in a single day.

“President Trump’s leadership has resulted in the most secure border in this nation’s history,” border czar Tom Homan posted on social media Tuesday. He pointed out that in December 2023, over 4,800 illegal immigrants were released in just one day.

The change has been so complete that Border Patrol officers have reportedly told Fox News they’re actually “bored” – a job hazard no one saw coming! There are so few “gotaways” to chase that some agents might need to find new hobbies. This remarkable turnaround comes less than six months after the administration took office.

A Tale of Two Approaches

The dramatic shift highlights basic differences in enforcement philosophy. Under the previous administration, Homan noted that migrants were purposely released rather than detained.

“Why did they release people into the interior United States rather than put them into an ICE bed?” Homan asked. “They did it on purpose, because you put them in ICE detention bed, they get a hearing in 35 days. Court records show nine out of ten people claim asylum, get order removal, they’re gone.”

The current approach stops migrants from being able to pay off smuggling debts, which discourages others from making the journey. When migrants are held rather than released, the money incentives driving illegal immigration fall apart. Word travels fast through smuggling networks when the journey ends in detention instead of release.

The administration has also changed how they use technology. The CBP One app, which previously helped people seeking to enter the country, has been transformed into the CBP Home app – now used to help those in the country illegally to self-deport.

Leaders Applaud Results

Political leaders have been quick to highlight the achievement. “PROMISES MADE, PROMISES KEPT,” House Speaker Mike Johnson wrote. “Another CLEAR example of strong, America First Leadership.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott added his own take: “Trump – 0. Biden – 64,000. Incredible. THIS is what real leadership looks like on the border.”

For American communities that have felt the impact of uncontrolled migration, the results mean more than just numbers. They signal a return to sovereignty and the rule of law. The transformation at the border shows that with proper leadership and clear priorities, even the toughest challenges can be solved effectively.

Key Takeaways

  • Border Patrol released zero illegal migrants into the US in May 2025, compared to 62,000 during the same month last year.
  • President Trump’s border policies have created the most secure southern border in US history according to officials.
  • The dramatic 93% decrease in illegal crossings demonstrates how enforcement policies directly impact migration patterns.
  • Detention rather than release prevents migrants from paying smugglers, which discourages future illegal immigration attempts.
