With Justice Kennedy retiring, President Trump once again has a chance to select a new member of the Supreme Court. This is something we’ve been discussing for a long time.
Now, it’s finally happening, and he may already have his pick lined up.
As liberal shriek, the rest of us are speculating whom Trump would pick. There was a fabled list of 20 possible contenders. That list was recently shortened to just 3-5 top choices.
The person Trump picks will have to embody the values of the conservative party, have a sterling track record, and be above reproach in his or her reputation. They also have to be willing to endure the attacks from the left—who will most certainly seek to undermine the process.
News is now surfacing that Trump has a favorite for the highest court in the land.
From The Hill:
President Trump has privately asked advisers for their thoughts on the possibility of nominating Utah Sen. Mike Lee (R) to the Supreme Court as Justice Anthony Kennedy’s replacement, according to a Thursday report.
Three sources familiar with the White House search for a new justice told Bloomberg News that Trump has raised the possibility of Lee, whom he believes would easily pass a Senate confirmation vote.
The news comes just a day after Lee told reporters on Capitol Hill that he was still interested in being named to the nation’s highest court were Trump to extend the offer. Lee was one of just over 20 names released by the White House last year of potential replacements for the late Justice Antonin Scalia, a seat that eventually went to Justice Neil Gorsuch.
Mike Lee’s name floated around when Trump sought to fill Scalia’s seat. It’s not a huge surprise that Trump still has his eye on the man.
Speculation is high and there are no doubt many closed door discussions regarding the next pick. Trump and his team have to be sure the Justice will uphold the Constitution and betray the public’s confidence. They also have to know how he or she will endure what will most likely be unjust attacks from Democrats.
But we are confident President Trump knows how to vet people. He will select the best man or woman for the job. And if it turns out to be Mike Lee, we are in for an interesting summer.
