What’s Happening:
Americans were stunned this week after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was removed from power. Uncertainty hangs over Congress, as many speculate on who will take up the gavel. Already, several prominent Republicans are campaigning for support.
Soon after McCarthy announced he would not run again, people turned their attention to Donald Trump. In the past, some suggested the former president should become Speaker. The Constitution does not require the Speaker to be a member of Congress.
Now, some have hinted, once again, that Trump should become the next Speaker of the House. The 2024 candidate was already asked what he thought about the possibility. And he has issued a startling response.
From Daily Wire:
Former President Donald Trump endorsed House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) to be the next Speaker of the House after a small number of Republicans teamed up with the entire House Democrat Caucus to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the position this week…“… He will be a GREAT Speaker of the House, & has my Complete & Total Endorsement!”
Trump released a statement endorsing House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan to be the next Speaker. The former president offered glowing praise of Jordan, calling him a “STAR” before he entered politics.
He said Jordan was “respected by all.” Trump also praised Jordan’s accomplishments as an athlete while in school. He listed his educational achievements as well as his strong views on “Crime, Borders, our Military/Vets & Second Amendment.”
This comes as some suggested that Trump become the next Speaker. The former president had previously mulled the possibility, refusing to completely disregard it. But it does appear that Trump might lend his influence to the process, with a trip to Capitol Hill.
From The Post Millennial:
2024 GOP frontrunner Donald Trump is reportedly considering a visit to Congress next week…The source said that Trump would speak to House GOP before the lawmakers’ internal speaker election, which is set to take place on Wednesday.
It is possible Trump wants to speak directly to House Republicans, to seal Jordan’s victory. Currently, Rep. Steve Scalise is also campaigning for the job, while other names have been discussed among pundits.
Key Takeaways:
- Donald Trump endorsed Jim Jordan to be the next Speaker of the House.
- Trump praised Jordan’s successes and his strong conservative values.
